Flowing Notes 音 瀑

Flowing Notes is a concert project that highlights contemporary repertoire for saxophone and percussion. Inspired by the imagery of cascading water, the title Flowing Notes symbolises a continuous stream of rich sounds and boundless imagination throughout the performance.

All About The Project

Following the success of its 2022/23 project 拾音.時音 (Au-delà du Son), once again ventures into the fusion of contemporary musical languages for saxophone and various instruments. This time, the ensemble collaborates with the renowned Taiwanese percussion duo, NanaFormosa Percussion Duo, continuing its mission to bridge audiences' understanding and appreciation of contemporary music through the integration of diverse artistic elements. In particular, within the realms of saxophone and percussion, the contemporary repertoire that emerged after the 20th century is richer compared to other instruments. This performance seeks to create a dialogue between the contemporary musical languages of these two instruments.

The programme opens with three works by the French spectral music master Philippe Leroux—Noûs, Airs, and SPP. These pieces break free from conventional harmonic structures and formalised musical phrases, allowing spectral soundscapes to expand the audience’s perception of music. The performance will also incorporate synchronised lighting and visual elements, extending the auditory experience into the realms of visual and spatial perception. Following this, the concert transitions with Toshio Hosokawa’s Für Walter: Arc Song II, shifting the musical language from continuous spectral textures to a more fragmented structure. This shift paves the way for Martin Matalon and Philippe Hurel’s works—Prelude and Blue and Localized Corrosion—which interweave noise, serialism, and elements of contemporary blues and jazz.

Continuing the concept of 拾音.時音 (Au-delà du son), this performance incorporates theatrical elements as an extension of the sonic experience. In late 20th-century contemporary music, composers began exploring new mediums through which sound itself could communicate, moving beyond the harmonic progressions that traditionally guided auditory and emotional responses. In this performance, E.SG further challenges the idea of leveraging the synesthetic qualities inherent in sound—its colours, dynamism, noise, and subtle textures—and its interaction with the performance space to guide the audience into their own realm of sensory perception. This concert will present an imaginative soundscape interwoven through the voices of saxophone and percussion, creating a world where sound and imagination intertwine.
